It is my belief, that the Athletes taking part in our games, have to have a more integral and high profile role. This, I also believe, is long overdue.
The reasoning for this, is so we may preserve the history, format, and tradition stemming from the very first gathering in Ceres, in the year of 1314, in the Kingdom of Fife be preserved and homage paid to the brave people that decided to act against tyranny, and simply be free.
Thus, bringing the athletes and indeed the clans closer into our ‘family’ and paying homage to their important role within the celebrations of our games is something I am personally proud of. In my first year of office I am personally excited that what I always wished to see is now taking place.
The athletes, demonstrating feats of strength, through various disciplines are an inspiration to us all. - Jimmy Rodden President.

Maine Lifting Stones
Scotland’s culture is unique in ways perhaps you were not aware of. Ancient Celtic and Viking cultures have historically held physical feats of strength with reverence and as a test for one’s worth in society. Originally they were called “Clach Neart” for ‘Stones of Strength’ or “Clach Cuid Fir” for ‘Manhood Stones’.
If you haven’t yet seen the documentary “Stoneland” we suggest you make it a priority. Afterwards you will understand why we are very proud to announce the release of a traditional Scottish test of strength that will be unique to our Maine Highland Games.
Modeled after the historic and famous Dinnie Stones which reside in Potarch, Aberdeenshire, we present to you all “The Maine Lifting Stones.” Each stone will have a ring handle attached to it. Both stones are to be lifted simultaneously and held for maximum time. There will be two sets: 1) the lighter set will weigh around 450 lbs total and is geared towards the women; and 2) the heavier set will have a combined weight of around 650 lbs and is geared toward the men and/or more advanced lifters. Both sets are made from local Maine granite.
Our hope is that anyone looking to work towards lifting the actual Dinnie Stones in Potarch will be able to use these as “stepping stones”. Every person who has a successful lift will be presented with a certificate, their lift will be recorded in the Maine Lifting Stones journal, and the best male and female lifters of the day will be awarded commemorative trophies.
We invite everyone to come test their mettle and become one of the first certified lifters written in the history books of the Maine Highland Games! Alba gu brath!
