Hello! I'm an Administrator of The Scottish Fiddle Orchestra and I have some exciting news to share with your members....The SFO are celebrating our 40th anniversary year by touring to North America and Canada this spring and we have some concerts near you which we’d love to share with you! We are performing at the Franco Centre for the Arts in Lewiston on the 1st of April this year. Hello, I think your members may be interested in a new children’s book with a strong Burns and Scottish cycling theme.

In Jamesie Burns and the Bicycle Thieves (the title is inspired by the Italian film from 1948 – the Bicycle Thieves / I Ladri di Biciclette) Jamesie and his friends befriend Kirkpatrick Macmillan, who was actually real, and lived in the Drumlanrig Castle area of Nithsdale in the same time the fictitious adventures of Jamesie are set. Kirkpatrick ‘Pate’ Macmillan invented an early form of the bicycle and it is this bicycle that is the focus of the adventure story. You’ll need to buy the book to find out what happens next!

Jamesie Burns, to remind everyone, lives in 1840s Dumfriesshire, is 11 years old and is a very happy and popular lad who nonetheless gets into extremely dangerous adventures, thanks to the presence nearby of local criminals the McCloy family. If you ever come across them avoid them at all costs!!

In doing background research for the book and the real life of Kirkpatrick Macmillan, I came across what every aspiring children’s author needs – a hero and a person of impeccable moral authority. Pate Macmillan was such a person, and to try and profile his achievements to a wider public I’ve written a short, 5000 word biography of him that forms part of the book – the idea being that people enjoy the fiction of Bicycle Thieves and then will be open to learning the actual facts of Kirkpatrick Macmillan’s invention of his velocipede and life.
Belatedly, I realised that Pate can be an ongoing character in the Jamesie Burns series of books, which is a real bonus – if he survives the despicable actions of the bicycle thieves……..

Each year until 2023 Hoggett Creative will publish a brand new Jamesie Burns adventure, on Burns Night. In 2021, our second Jamesie Burns title will be The Secret Tunnels of Queenstown Castle!! Jamesie and all his friends return in this adventure, though danger lurks when they find a secret entrance to one of the tunnels under the Castle. Will the horrible McCloys lie in wait? And is the Castle’s masterpiece, Leonardo Da Vinci’s the Merry Lisa, safe from the many art thieves who would love to spirit it away from Scotland?
