Many years ago, a small group of Scots decided that Maine should have a highland games like many held across the country. They put their heads together and realized they would need an organization to carry forward that idea. So, 32 years ago the Saint Andrews Society of Maine was organized.
The games were held in various locations, over the years. This year they were held at the Topsham Fairgrounds after many years at Thomas Point Beach. The move was a difficult one requiring many hours of volunteer time and numerous committee meetings.
The planning must have paid off as one of the games visitors told our President Sue Mack “you have hit a home run!”
Games chair Bill McKeen said in response, “Yes, it was a home run, but of course, there were also a few errors.” Bill followed with, “we held a special games committee meeting to discuss any criticism. That discussion will help us present a better Maine Highland Games and Scottish Festival next year.”
New features were added this year to broaden the appeal of the games. A Kilted Golf Tournament, a Friday night outdoor concert, a harper’s circle, and sheepdog trials were some of the new events. These drew new spectators and participants that we have not had before.
Now, we begin to plan for 2011 and we need your help. We are asking all members of the society to step forward and become part of the 2011 games. You might like to attend one of our monthly meetings usually held the first Saturday of the month.
